Changes to Kanopy Access

Kanopy logo

Beginning September 1, 2021, the library shifted its access model for Kanopy streaming media from "unlimited" to a combination of "unlimited" titles (Smart PDA) and "mediated."

Why the change?

This change comes as a result of the increasing costs of the service, which have quadrupled since 2015 and are no longer sustainable. This new approach to Kanopy access will continue to support the curriculum and at the same time help the library manage its budget strategically.

What is Kanopy's Mediated Model?

We will continue to provide instant access to a portion of Kanopy's catalog. The remainder of available titles will require mediation by a library staff member, who will review and approve requests, or direct the requestor to an alternative source (a different streaming service or a physical copy of the DVD owned by the library).

Kanopy browsing at the site remains the same, with a request form appearing when a mediated film is chosen. The form will be sent to the library and a librarian may be in touch for additional information, or to offer alternative access to the film.

What happens after I make the request? How long will it take to see the film?

Requests will go to Carmen Greenlee, Humanities and Media Librarian, or to staff moderating the service. You can expect to hear from us on the next business day.

Please remember that Bowdoin's rich collection of over 16,000 DVDs is available to you through Compass. We offer streaming content through 13 film databases in addition to Kanopy. Carmen Greenlee is always glad to assist, so do not hesitate to be in touch with her.
