How to

  1. Head to Bowdoin Library's Compass to begin your search.

  2. Use the dropdown menu in the main search bar to select Special Collections & Archives to search only within our holdings.

  3. Begin your search by using keywords, titles, authors, or other search terms.
  4. When you have your results, you can use the column on the left to refine your search results by several criteria: format, creation date, Bowdoin location, and more. You can also see the location of each item listed at the bottom of each catalog entry to confirm that it is located in Special Collections.

  5. Open the catalog record of the desired item and select Bowdoin Special Collections – Request for onsite use.

  6. If you have not already logged into your Aeon account, selecting this button will prompt you to log in. Once logged in, a request form will appear with the item’s catalog information pre-filled.

  7. Selecting the green button, Order Reproduction, indicates you would like a scan of your desired material sent to you. A new field will appear to allow you to describe what portions of the material you need digitized (specific page numbers, page ranges, images, etc.), as well as indicate if you are interested in publishing the image.
    • Also important in this field is selecting that you agree to the copyright terms.

  8. Whether you are requesting a scan of a book or want to view it in person, the field Message to Archive Staff allows you to give us more information about your visit, research questions, special requests, etc.
  9. When you have finished the above steps, select the green Submit button at the bottom of the page and you’re done! If you encounter any issues with this process, please contact us at (207) 725-3288 or
