Permissions

Content available in Bowdoin Library’s Digital Collections may be used for educational, research, and non-commercial purposes without our written permission.  Please cite such items as:

For all other materials and for all commercial uses, including content within the Image Gallery, you will need to obtain written permission from Special Collections & Archives. You may request this permission at the time you order a reproduction or you can email us. Either way, we'll need the following information:

  • Details about the materials you wish to reproduce
  • Title of your publication, website, etc.
  • Publisher
  • Anticipated publication date
  • Print run or distribution plan

Requests for permission to publish are considered on a case-by-case basis and are granted for one-time, nonexclusive use.

Permissions are contingent upon receipt of applicable fees, as stated below, or as negotiated with the Director of Special Collections & Archives:

Not for profit:

  • Up to 1,000 copies: No charge
  • More than 1,000 copies: $50.00 per image

For profit:

  • Up to 1,000 copies: $50.00 per image
  • More than 1,000 copies: $100.00 per image

When copyright is held outside Bowdoin College, our permission to publish does not extend to copyright. The applicant accepts all responsibility for obtaining the required permission from copyright holders in order to publish materials protected by copyright law.
