William D. Shipman was born on November 15, 1925 in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. He received his A.B. in 1949 from the University of Washington, his A.M. from the University of California Berkeley in 1950, and his Ph.D. from Columbia in 1960. After a short time with the government and private sector, Shipman came to Bowdoin where he taught economics beginning in 1957. In the 1969-1970 academic year, he was appointed Adams-Catlin Professor of Economics, becoming Adams-Catlin Professor of Economics emeritus in June 1992. Shipman served as a consultant to the Federal Power Commission and the Main Public Utilities Commission. In addition to several works on energy, Shipman authored The Early Architecture of Bowdoin College and Brunswick, Maine in 1973, with a revised edition in 1985. In Brunswick he lived at 75 Federal Street from 1960 until 1991, when the College purchased his house.
The collection comprises William D. Shipman's Bowdoin College administrative files (1957-1987) from his tenure as faculty, including committee reports, class schedules, department reviews, Senior Center Council materials, and a housing study. The collection also contains papers from Shipman's non-Bowdoin professional work, the bulk of which are from the 1970s and 1980s and concern Maine's energy plan and U.S./Canada economic relations; materials include conference reports, Maine energy reports and related correspondence, economic reports, news articles, and research papers.
Organized in two series: Bowdoin College and Energy and Economics.
