Stetson Collection on Wiscasset Shipping Families, George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, Bowdoin College Library, Brunswick, Maine.

Erastus Foote (1777-1856) was a trustee of Bowdoin College, 1821-1844, served as Maine's attorney general in the 1820s, and collector of customs for the District of Wiscasset in the 1860s. His son Erastus (1821-1893) was graduated from Bowdoin in 1843 and was an overseer of the College, 1856-1866. The collection was donated by Mrs. Rufus Stetson, descendant of George Stetson, who was involved in the shipping industry in Wiscasset in the 1880s.

Three ships' logs and various documents (1797-1890) concerning Wiscasset, Maine, ship owners and their ships (including the Apollo, Betsey, Mary, Nabby, George Stetson, and Walter); as well as French spoliation claim materials for ships the Nabby, Betsey, and Nancy. Also contains letters, diaries and journals, deeds, financial documents, genealogical material, and clippings of Moses Carleton, and the Foote, Wood, and other related families from Wiscasset, Maine. The Foote family materials include Erastus Foote's college compositions and journals from his time at Bowdoin College and material concerning Lime Island and the Waldo Coal, Iron, Marble and Lime Mining and Manufacturing Company (Wiscasset, Maine).
