Julian C. Holmes Papers, George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, Bowdoin College Library, Brunswick, Maine.
The George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, like all archives and special collections libraries, is the creation of human beings who have collected, organized, and described things in ways that reflect personal, cultural, societal, and institutional biases. Although we strive to preserve and present collections in a manner that is respectful to the individuals and communities who create, use, and are represented in the collections, we acknowledge that our systems are neither neutral nor perfect. We encourage you to let us know if you encounter materials, descriptive language, or practices that are offensive or harmful, particularly those for which inadequate context or warning is offered. We are committed to modifying and updating our descriptive practices to use respectful and inclusive terminology and appreciate your help in this work. We look forward to supporting you in your research and learning together.
Julian Clifford Holmes was born November 20, 1930 in Portland, Maine. After attending Brunswick High School, Holmes went to Bowdoin College and was graduated cum laude in 1952. He later worked as a scientist for the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. Holmes was also an activist for many causes such as peace, justice, healthcare, and the environment. In 1970, he was awarded the Washington Evening Star Trophy for Outstanding Civic Achievement by the Prince Georges Civic Federation. Holmes died December 16, 2012 in Lewiston, Maine.
This collection is split into two series: Sears Island and MTBE (Methyl Tert-Butyl Ether).
Sears Island: This series contains interagency correspondence as well as correspondence between citizens, environmental organizations, legislators, and consultants regarding the possible construction of a dry cargo terminal on Sears Island. Also included in this series are reports from consulting firms exploring the feasibility of construction of the port as well as the alternatives, testimonies for and against construction, notes and minutes on interagency meetings, information provided by various organizations and invested citizens, and newspaper clippings, press releases, and letters-to-the-editor.
MTBE: This series contains primarily clippings, press releases, letters-to-the-editor, and correspondence regarding MTBE incorporation into gasoline, air quality, and water quality. Also included are informational studies and notes as well as testimonies and comments.
This series is broken down into five categories: correspondence, clippings, press releases, and letters-to-the-editor, meeting minutes and proceedings, testimonies and comments, and information, studies and notes. Correspondences are grouped by the receiver of the correspondence and then arranged chronologically, whereas everything else is arranged chronologically.
