Athern P. Daggett Papers, George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, Bowdoin College Library, Brunswick, Maine.
The George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, like all archives and special collections libraries, is the creation of human beings who have collected, organized, and described things in ways that reflect personal, cultural, societal, and institutional biases. Although we strive to preserve and present collections in a manner that is respectful to the individuals and communities who create, use, and are represented in the collections, we acknowledge that our systems are neither neutral nor perfect. We encourage you to let us know if you encounter materials, descriptive language, or practices that are offensive or harmful, particularly those for which inadequate context or warning is offered. We are committed to modifying and updating our descriptive practices to use respectful and inclusive terminology and appreciate your help in this work. We look forward to supporting you in your research and learning together.
Athern Park Daggett was born in Springfield, Missouri on January 10, 1904. He received his A.B. magna cum laude from Bowdoin in 1925 and an honorary LL.D. from Bowdoin in 1969. His A.M. and Ph.D. were from Harvard in 1928 and 1931. Daggett taught history and government at Bowdoin in the fall of 1930, returning for good in the fall of 1933 to teach English and then government. Beginning in 1936, he taught government courses only. In 1951 he became the first member of the faculty to hold the endowed chair of William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Constitutional and International Law and Government, a position he held until his death. Daggett also served as acting president of the College from July 1967 until December 1968. A member of the Bowdoin Alumni Council, he became the first recipient of the Council's annual Alumni Award for faculty and staff in 1963. He also received the Town of Brunswick Distinguished Service Award in 1969. Daggett died on January 20, 1973 in Portland, Maine as a result of injuries suffered in a fall outside Hubbard Hall twelve days earlier. In 1974 the main lounge in Wentworth Hall was named in his memory.
This collection contains Daggett's files and academic hood. Files include memos from the 1940's regarding dim-out patrol, the First Parish Church, and the Brunswick School Department budget. Bowdoin files concern the Senior Center Council, senior seminars, government examinations, dedication of the Hawthorne-Longfellow Library and Lancaster Lounge, Moulton Union, as well as President Howell's inauguration.
