Edward Stanwood was born in Augusta, Maine, on September 16, 1841. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1861. After leaving college he became assistant editor of the Kennebec Journal in Augusta until 1867, during this period he also received his A.M (1864). In 1867, he accepted a position on the editorial staff of the Boston Advertiser. Besides his work at the Advertiser, Stanwood also published a translation of George Sand’s “Cesarina Dietrich,” and the first edition of “Boston Illustrated.” He also contributed articles to the North American Review, the Bankers’ and other magazines. He was also a correspondent of the Cincinnati Commercial as well as other journals. In 1894, Stanwood received his Litt.D. Stanwood was an Overseer from 1886-1904 and a Trustee from 1904-1923. He died in 1923 in Brookline, Mass, where he resided with his wife and two children.
