Augustus Freedom Moulton Papers, George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, Bowdoin College Library, Brunswick, Maine.
The George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, like all archives and special collections libraries, is the creation of human beings who have collected, organized, and described things in ways that reflect personal, cultural, societal, and institutional biases. Although we strive to preserve and present collections in a manner that is respectful to the individuals and communities who create, use, and are represented in the collections, we acknowledge that our systems are neither neutral nor perfect. We encourage you to let us know if you encounter materials, descriptive language, or practices that are offensive or harmful, particularly those for which inadequate context or warning is offered. We are committed to modifying and updating our descriptive practices to use respectful and inclusive terminology and appreciate your help in this work. We look forward to supporting you in your research and learning together.
Augustus Freedom Moulton (Bowdoin 1873) lived from 1848 to 1933. Moulton was born in Jay, Maine, on May 1, 1848 to Freedom and Sarah Coffin Carter Moulton. He practiced law in Portland from 1876 to 1933. He became the State Representative from Scarborough (1878-1879) and then the mayor of Deering in 1898. In 1927, Moulton was appointed state historian. His books include Portland By The Sea (1926), and History of Prout's Neck (1924). Moulton served on Bowdoin's Board of Overseers (1911-1933), and granted the school a sum of money in 1927 to construct a union. He died on March 16, 1933.
The collection contains Moulton's Bowdoin college compositions (1869-1873), essays (1901-1925), and scrapbook; also includes a journal of Moulton's trip to Europe (1906), a letter book (1881-1890) from his law practice, and a photograph album that contains photographs of Ivy Day celebrations at Smith College.
