Professor Allen Johnson (1870-1931) was born in Lowell, Massachusetts. He graduated from Amherst College in 1892 before going abroad and studying in Leipzig and Paris. After recieving his doctorate from Columbia University in 1899, he began teaching political science and history. He first worked at Grinnell (1898-1905), Bowdoin College (1905-1910), and finally Yale (1910-1926). His books include Stephen A. Douglas: A Study in American Politics (1908), Readings in American Constitutional History, 1776–1876 (1912), Union and Democracy (1915), The Historian and Historical Evidence (1926), and Readings in Recent American Constitutional History, 1876–1926 (1927). He was also editor of the Dictionary of American Biography and of Yale University Press' 50-volume Chronicles of America series. He was married and had one son. He died when he was hit by a car in Washington D.C.

The collection contains travel notes from India, one-act plays, speeches, and lectures written by Allen Johnson. It also contains a manuscript of "A History of the American People." Also includes press clippings and ephemera related to the life and teachings of Professor Johnson.
