John Small Dyer Papers, George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, Bowdoin College Library. Brunswick, Maine.
The George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, like all archives and special collections libraries, is the creation of human beings who have collected, organized, and described things in ways that reflect personal, cultural, societal, and institutional biases. Although we strive to preserve and present collections in a manner that is respectful to the individuals and communities who create, use, and are represented in the collections, we acknowledge that our systems are neither neutral nor perfect. We encourage you to let us know if you encounter materials, descriptive language, or practices that are offensive or harmful, particularly those for which inadequate context or warning is offered. We are committed to modifying and updating our descriptive practices to use respectful and inclusive terminology and appreciate your help in this work. We look forward to supporting you in your research and learning together.
Born in New Sharon, Maine, on October 31, 1869 to George Eustis Dyer and Betsey Ann Littlefield, John Small Dyer devoted his life to his family, friends, and patients in Maine. He graduated from the Medical School of Maine in 1904. After graduation, he worked as a physician in his hometown from 1904-10. He then relocated to Harmony, Maine and worked there from 1911-18. From 1918 until his death, on July 9, 1922, Dyer worked and lived in Winter Harbor, Maine. He was a member of the Maine Medical Association.
Dyer married Edith Laughton Forbus, daughter of Leonard Cotton Forbus and Grace Welman Laughton, on March 3, 1910. They had one daughter, Madelyn Edith Dyer.
This collection is comprised of a series of photocopied transcripts of typescript excerpts from the diaries and journals of John Small Dyer (June 18, 1904-July 9, 1922).
