Edward Page Mitchell Papers, George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, Bowdoin College Library, Brunswick, Maine.
The George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, like all archives and special collections libraries, is the creation of human beings who have collected, organized, and described things in ways that reflect personal, cultural, societal, and institutional biases. Although we strive to preserve and present collections in a manner that is respectful to the individuals and communities who create, use, and are represented in the collections, we acknowledge that our systems are neither neutral nor perfect. We encourage you to let us know if you encounter materials, descriptive language, or practices that are offensive or harmful, particularly those for which inadequate context or warning is offered. We are committed to modifying and updating our descriptive practices to use respectful and inclusive terminology and appreciate your help in this work. We look forward to supporting you in your research and learning together.
Edward Page Mitchell was born in Bath, Maine on March 24, 1852. After graduating from Bowdoin College (Class of 1871), Mitchell worked as a journalist from 1871-1874 in Bath, in Lewiston for the Journal, and in Boston for the Daily Advertiser. From 1875-1926 he worked in New York City for The Sun; he was editor-in-chief for 50 years after succeeding Charles A. Dana. Mitchell was also a writer, considered a pioneer of the science fiction genre. He received an honorary degree from Bowdoin College in 1906, and from Columbia University in 1919. He also served as a Bowdoin overseer from 1917-1927. Mitchell died on January 22, 1927 in New London, Connecticut.
The collection contains a scrapbook titled "My Book of Bowdoin in College and Afterwards," and a scrapbook of letters about Mitchell's 1924 publication, "Memoirs of an Editor: Fifty Years of American Journalism." There is correspondence addressed to Mitchell at the Sun, personal correspondence, additional biographical material, and newspaper clippings. A bounty hunter's bill dated February 18, 1777 and other miscellaneous printed materials are also included.
