Model Democratic Convention Records, George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, Bowdoin College Library, Brunswick, Maine
The George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, like all archives and special collections libraries, is the creation of human beings who have collected, organized, and described things in ways that reflect personal, cultural, societal, and institutional biases. Although we strive to preserve and present collections in a manner that is respectful to the individuals and communities who create, use, and are represented in the collections, we acknowledge that our systems are neither neutral nor perfect. We encourage you to let us know if you encounter materials, descriptive language, or practices that are offensive or harmful, particularly those for which inadequate context or warning is offered. We are committed to modifying and updating our descriptive practices to use respectful and inclusive terminology and appreciate your help in this work. We look forward to supporting you in your research and learning together.
The Model Democratic Convention held at Bowdoin College, February 13-15, 1976, was designed to simulate a real political convention including the adoption of a platform and nomination of presidential and vice presidential candidates. Christopher Wolf and Robert Harvey, members of the Class of 1976, served as the planning committee's chairman and co-chairman. The College's Department of Government and Legal Studies, and the Bowdoin Political Forum, a non-partisan student organization, assisted with arrangements. Dean Alice Early served as faculty advisor, and members of the College community volunteered to be state delegates. According to Christopher Wolf, a Democratic convention was chosen because the Democratic party was out of office, which traditionally resulted in a more interesting convention. Bowdoin's model convention preceded all of the national primaries and resulted in a ticket with Hubert H. Humphrey as the presidential nominee and Jimmy Carter as the vice presidential nominee.
