Gender and Women's Studies Program: Records, George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, Bowdoin College Library, Brunswick, Maine
The George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, like all archives and special collections libraries, is the creation of human beings who have collected, organized, and described things in ways that reflect personal, cultural, societal, and institutional biases. Although we strive to preserve and present collections in a manner that is respectful to the individuals and communities who create, use, and are represented in the collections, we acknowledge that our systems are neither neutral nor perfect. We encourage you to let us know if you encounter materials, descriptive language, or practices that are offensive or harmful, particularly those for which inadequate context or warning is offered. We are committed to modifying and updating our descriptive practices to use respectful and inclusive terminology and appreciate your help in this work. We look forward to supporting you in your research and learning together.
The 1993-1994 academic year marked the first time in which students could pursue either a major or minor in Women's Studies. (A minor was established in 1988, and previously students could self-design a major). Courses are interdisciplinary, and incorporate research done on women and gender. To reflect the focus on women and gender the name of the program changed from Women's Studies Program to Gender and Women's Studies Program effective with the 2005-2006 academic year.
This collection contains announcements of activities, posters, reports, and issues of WomeNews, a newsletter published by the Women's Studies Program and the Women's Resource Center. There are workshop and conference materials including those from the Maine Women's Studies Conferences, of which the 1990, 1991, and 2004 were hosted by Bowdoin.
