Jesse Appleton (1772-1819), served as Bowdoin's second President from 1807 until his death, apparently of tuberculosis, in 1819. A Congregationalist minister and a graduate of Dartmouth College, Appleton attempted to instill what he called "piety" into Bowdoin students.

Personal information, including Appleton's sermons, is available in the Jesse Appleton Collection.

This collection contains general correspondence concerning College affairs. Included is a document describing the "order of arrangement" at Appleton's inauguration as President, in 1807. Most primary source material concerning the administration of the College in the early years is found in the records of the Board of Trustees or in the Records of the Faculty which includes the records of the Executive Government.
