Agency History / Biographical Note:
A. LeRoy Greason was named acting president January 1,1981 and was
inaugurated as Bowdoin's twelfth president the following October. A professor
of English literature and Dean of the
College(1966-1975), Greason was responsible for reestablishing
distribution requirements, expanding the academic program and revising the
curriculum for first year students to emphasize writing. The Women's Studies
Program, the Asian Studies Program and the Department of Computer Science
were all added during his tenure. He also oversaw the expansion of campus
facilities with the construction of the William Farley Field House and the
Hatch Science Library.
Scope and Content:
General office files of A. LeRoy Greason. Contains files on a number of
subjects, including the Campaign for Bowdoin, fraternities, WCBB Channel 10
and the President's Commission on the Status of Women. As material in folders
may overlap presidential administrations, the researcher may wish to consult
the records of former and subsequent presidents for relevant information on a
