Office of the Dean of Student Affairs: Records and Publications, George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, Bowdoin College Library, Brunswick, Maine
The George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, like all archives and special collections libraries, is the creation of human beings who have collected, organized, and described things in ways that reflect personal, cultural, societal, and institutional biases. Although we strive to preserve and present collections in a manner that is respectful to the individuals and communities who create, use, and are represented in the collections, we acknowledge that our systems are neither neutral nor perfect. We encourage you to let us know if you encounter materials, descriptive language, or practices that are offensive or harmful, particularly those for which inadequate context or warning is offered. We are committed to modifying and updating our descriptive practices to use respectful and inclusive terminology and appreciate your help in this work. We look forward to supporting you in your research and learning together.
The Office of Student Affairs administers programs and policies relating to student life at the college, including curricular, extra-curricular and co-curricular activities. This includes offering students advice, providing references to other college services, assisting in emergency situations, and acting as liaison between the student and faculty/staff.
The Dean of Student Affairs supervises a wide variety of campus offices that provide services, guidance, and advice to Bowdoin Students and relays student concerns to the President and the Board of Trustees. The dean is also responsible for overseeing the College discipline system.
In 1909, President Hyde formed a new office, the Office of the Dean [of the College]. Most student-related administrative functions of the college as well as some faculty matters were the responsibility of this dean. The first Dean of the College was Kenneth C.M. Sills who was also Chairman of the Latin department. He was replaced by Paul Nixon when Sills became President in 1918. Subsequent deans served in this capacity until 1995 when the office was renamed.
In 1962, the position of Dean of Students was created as a subsidiary office of the Dean of the College. Its function was to maintain a closer contact with students and student issues.
The Office of the Dean of Student Life, founded in 1995, was formed by merging the functions of the Dean of Students and the Dean of the College. The Office of Student Life was renamed the Office of Student Affairs in 1996. This new office also reorganized the class dean structure. Craig Bradley was the first person appointed dean in this new administrative department.
The Office of the Dean of Student Affairs also publishes the Student Handbook.
Records cover a variety of subjects, most from the early 1960's to the present. Files include: general correspondence, subject files, committee minutes and records, various publications, and former student files. There are also Upward Bound, Twelve College Exchange, and fraternity materials.
Files in this collection originated in the offices of the Dean of the College, Dean of Students, Dean of Student Life, and Dean of Student Affairs. As a result, there may be more than one file for the same subject with overlapping dates.
This series contains "facebooks," published annually from 1969. A facebook is a bound collection of photographs, names, and hometowns of first-year, transfer and exchange students. Also included is a class of 1945 publication titled "Pictorial" which is similar to the newer facebooks, and unbound publications 1964-1968 much like the "Pictorial." Student Directories (6.1.9) for 1953-1965 include photographs of the students. The 1964-1967 issues however, are incomplete. The name of the publication changed from Facebook to PicBook in 2010 with the Class of 2014, but the content (photographs, names, and hometowns) remained unchanged. From the class of 1969 through the class of 1999 there are both bound copies (comprising two volumes) and an unbound copy for each class year. From class of 2000 onward, there are two unbound copies.

The Upward Bound Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare. Its primary purpose is to help low income, local area youth to aspire to and achieve a college education. The need for this program arose from the realization that too many high school students had been immutably tracked into a vocational education program when, instead, higher educational goals could be achieved with support and remediation. High school students are asked to continue their participation throughout high school and are given guidance during their college application process.
Bowdoin College has participated in this program since 1966. Mostly a summer program at Bowdoin, the records reflect activities which include counseling, tutoring, testing, guidance, workshops, field trips, speakers, health care, life skills and work-study.
