Library Support and Services: Fall 2020

Library hours for the fall semester will vary depending on the campus status level.

When the campus is in status level Yellow, Hawthorne-Longfellow Library (H-L) and the branch libraries are open to faculty, staff, and students who are resident on campus.  A OneCard is required for building entry.  Hours for all libraries are posted here

Library hours will be modified if the campus status level is Orange or Red. Check the calendar for current hours.

Access to Library Collections

The Library’s Take-Out Service will be available throughout the semester, even when library buildings are closed.  Faculty, staff, and students who are resident on campus are encouraged to take advantage of this service.

Information for Faculty and Staff Who are Not Participating in the Campus COVID-19 Testing Program

Faculty and staff who are working remotely during the fall semester can access the library’s physical materials in two ways:

    • Use MaineCat in conjunction with your local public library for items from Bowdoin and other Maine libraries. Before placing any requests, confirm your public library’s current services and hours.
      • You may access MaineCat from your public library’s website or, if you are searching in CBBcat, through the link that appears on the right-hand side of all search results pages.
      • You will pick-up your materials at your local library, so be sure to enter your public library credentials when placing your request.
      • Note that your local library’s loan rules will apply.
    • Use the Library Take-Out Service and arrange with a colleague who is participating in the Covid-19 test regime to pick up your materials from the H-L vestibule. Materials available for pick up will include items requested through Interlibrary Loan, when that service resumes.

Questions? Please contact Amy Heggie.

The Bowdoin College campus remains closed to visitors as a precaution against COVID-19 transmission.  Hawthorne-Longfellow Library, including Special Collections & Archives, and the branch libraries—Art, Music, and the Hatch Science Library—are therefore unable to welcome visitors until further notice.

You may email us at lib_circ@bowdoin.edu or call the Circulation Desk at 725-3280 to renew your currently checked-out materials. Any overdue charges will be waived.

Be assured that we will be re-open our doors as soon as possible.

Special Collections & Archives invites the Bowdoin community to document their experiences during the global pandemic. Learn more here.

At this time, only Bowdoin faculty, staff and students who are participating in Bowdoin’s COVID testing program and are authorized to be on campus may visit the Special Collections & Archives' reading room.  Archivists are available to assist with teaching, digitization, and research needs. Contact us via email. For details about these remote services, see our notice for researchers.

To request digital delivery from Bowdoin’s physical collection, please use the Document Delivery option on this page.
  1. Your username and password are the same as your Bowdoin email name and password
  2. Please submit a separate request for each unique article or chapter title.
  3. A PDF of each item will be delivered through your Bowdoin Digital Delivery & ILL user account.
  4. If you wish to have any item placed on course reserve, please save it to your desktop and submit using https://ereserves.bowdoin.edu/inbox/s20/pdf/

Resource Sharing in Maine is slowly returning to normal operation as more libraries open their doors. CBB delivery has resumed and MaineCat requesting is now available, though not all libraries are participating (only participating libraries’ holdings appear in a search result).  Please note that delivery times can exceed one week since all materials are being quarantined for 3-days before being handled by staff.

Interlibrary Loan for books and other physical materials has resumed as of Tuesday, September 8.  However, resource sharing services at many other libraries are still suspended.  Please allow several weeks to request and use Interlibrary Loan books.  Digital delivery of book chapters and journal articles from other institutions and from Bowdoin's physical collection (Bowdoin Digital Delivery) continues.

Information on Interlibrary Loan is available here.
