Ellis Spear III Papers, George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, Bowdoin College Library, Brunswick, Maine
The George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, like all archives and special collections libraries, is the creation of human beings who have collected, organized, and described things in ways that reflect personal, cultural, societal, and institutional biases. Although we strive to preserve and present collections in a manner that is respectful to the individuals and communities who create, use, and are represented in the collections, we acknowledge that our systems are neither neutral nor perfect. We encourage you to let us know if you encounter materials, descriptive language, or practices that are offensive or harmful, particularly those for which inadequate context or warning is offered. We are committed to modifying and updating our descriptive practices to use respectful and inclusive terminology and appreciate your help in this work. We look forward to supporting you in your research and learning together.
Ellis Spear III was born on July 11, 1905, in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, the son of Ellis Spear (Bowdoin Class of 1898) and grandson of Ellis Spear (Bowdoin Class of 1858). Spear was graduated from Bowdoin College in 1929 after preparatory work at Huntington Prep School. He received a master of arts degree from Harvard University in 1932 and was an assistant in the Department of Psychology at Harvard until 1934. Spear then taught at several schools in Massachusetts including the Cambridge School and the Nursery Training School of Boston, later the Eliot-Pearson School of Tufts College. From 1957 until his retirement in 1970, Spear taught at Lesley College, Cambridge, and for many years taught at the University of Maine while summering in Warren, Maine. Ellis Spear died on January 31, 1991, in Rockland, Maine, after a long illness.
The collection contains typed lecture notes, 1926-1929, chiefly in the natural sciences, compiled by Spear while a student at Bowdoin College. Also included are Spear's lab notes, a research paper, and examination questions, 1923-1931.
