Biographical/Historical Note

Preston Kyes was born on January 24, 1875 in North Jay, Maine, to Ebenezer and Caroline Cooledge Kyes. He prepared for college at Wilton Academy, then graduated "Cum laude" from Bowdoin in 1896. After receiving his M.D. from John Hopkins in 1900, Kyes taught anatomy, pathology, and preventive medicine at the Medical School of the University of Chicago, becoming professor emeritus in 1940. He was also associated with the Memorial Institute for Infectious Diseases in Chicago, and the Royal Prussian Institute for Experimental Therapy in Frankfurt, Germany. Kyes had a teaching fellowship at Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in New York City from 1902-1906, and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Bowdoin in 1921. He also wrote articles of original research, and edited scientific publications. Preston Kyes died at his home in North Jay on December 27, 1948. He was survived by his wife and several cousins.
