The 1883 album contains 57 albumen photographs depicting the expedition's stops during the trip to and from the Pacific atoll Caroline Island. The 1889 expedition album contains 79 albumen photographs that document travel aboard the USS Pensacola to the west coast of Africa and to Cape Town and the Kimberly Diamond Mines in South Africa, and then back to New York via St. Helena, the Island of Ascension, Bridgetown, Barbados, and the Bermuda Islands. The photographs portray landscapes, urban views, expedition members and activities, and indigenous peoples.

Based out of Harpswell, Maine, James was a master mariner who captained a series of progressively larger schooners from 1873 until at least 1907, including the 16.72 ton "Dolphin" of Bath (September 1873-April 1876), the 25.46 ton "Albert" of Portland (August 1878-May 1879), the 36.32 ton "Hattie M. Hamlin" of Harpswell (1882-1887?), the "Satilla" (1887?-1889), the "Carrie A. Lane" (1889?), the "Dicky Bird" (May 1890-April 1891), the 465.95 ton "Goeorgie L. Drake" (1892-1902), the "J. Edward Drake" (1903), the 1,294 ton "Myrtle Tunnell" (November 1904-October 1905), and finally the 776-ton "Isabel B. Wiley" (1906-1907?). Ella often accompanied James on these voyages. When apart, the couple wrote frequently, and much of the collection is comprised of their letters to and from one another, often concerning their son Ansel, who also became a sea captain. There are also letters with many members of the extended Skolfield and Eastman families. Business records document the provisioning, movement, ownership, and other activities of the schooners under James's command.

Abstract: The Mary Eliza Hunt Carson papers contain primarily correspondence, as well as photographs, clippings, a scrapbook, and other materials, documenting the life of Carson and her extended family. Born in Gorham, Maine, Carson was a teacher who located to Lancaster, and later Gettysburg and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As a resident of Gettysburg during the Civil War, she witnessed and wrote about the Battle of Gettysburg as well as President Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address in November 1863. She aided the North by creating bandages, sheltering residents, and nursing wounded soldiers, including her younger brother, Charles Hunt, who was injured on the first day of fighting. Carson was an avid letter writer and she relayed details of every day life to her mother who reamined in Gorham. There are also letters with many other members of the family including: Susan Waugh Carson (mother-in-law), Robert Carson (father-in-law), her brothers, Bowdoin graduates and Civil War veterans Charles and Henry Hastings Hunt, as well as a small amount of material related to later descendants. The collection also inlcludes a volume of handwritten transcriptions of Henry H. Hunt's Civil War correspondence, April 1863-April 1865, prepared by Susan Waugh Carson.

Abstract: A lawyer and politician, Thomas Brackett Reed (1839-1902; Bowdoin 1860) served in the Maine House (1867, 1868), Maine Senate (1869), as Attorney General (1870-1872), as U.S. Representative for the First Maine District (1877-1898), and as Speaker of the House (1889-1891, 1895-1899). A presidential candidate in 1896, Reed lost the Republican nomination to William McKinley. After leaving Congress in 1899, Reed practiced law in New York City. His collection includes correspondence, essays, manuscripts, articles and clippings. Additionally, there is a set of microfiche, prepared in 1974, from an extensive collection of Reed material retained by the Reed family, including his diaries. Prominent correspondents include Lyman Abbott, Susan B. Anthony, James G. Blaine, Robert G.
