Career Planning Center: Records and Publications, George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, Bowdoin College Library, Brunswick, Maine
The George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, like all archives and special collections libraries, is the creation of human beings who have collected, organized, and described things in ways that reflect personal, cultural, societal, and institutional biases. Although we strive to preserve and present collections in a manner that is respectful to the individuals and communities who create, use, and are represented in the collections, we acknowledge that our systems are neither neutral nor perfect. We encourage you to let us know if you encounter materials, descriptive language, or practices that are offensive or harmful, particularly those for which inadequate context or warning is offered. We are committed to modifying and updating our descriptive practices to use respectful and inclusive terminology and appreciate your help in this work. We look forward to supporting you in your research and learning together.
The Career Planning Center was created in 1944 as the Placement Bureau. Originally the office was primarily concerned with establishing contacts between current students and Bowdoin alumni who could offer them employment. As its interests and contacts expanded beyond the world of Bowdoin alumni, the name was changed to the Placement Office in 1961. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s the office aided both graduates and undergraduates in finding permanent and part-time employment. As career placement became more professional in the early 1970s, the office was renamed as the Office of Career Counseling and Placement. In addition to the more traditional services the office began to offer advice on resume writing and other job hunting skills. In 1978 it was renamed the Office of Career Services (OCS). Since July 1995 it has been known as the Career Planning Center.
The bulk of the material is publications produced by the Office of Career Services. Most significant is the collection of the Bulletin, a bi-weekly (originally weekly) publication that identifies employment opportunities and gives notices of on-campus recruiting, and information about graduate study. Although the office has existed since 1944, there are no records prior to 1962.
This series contains annual reports of the director of the Office of Career Services. The reports contain summary information of the activities of the office including statistics on counseling appointments and meetings, on-campus recruiters, workshops, and seminars.

The Bulletin began as a weekly memo listing the recruiters coming to campus. Later, it developed into the "Bulletin of the Outside World," that also included graduate study information, and schedules of workshops and other programs offered by Career Services. Although, primarily concerned with Seniors, the Bulletin also included part-time and volunteer opportunities open to undergraduates. In 1994 the Bulletin began publishing three editions: one for Alumni, one for Seniors, and one for Underclass students. In 1995 the names were changed to CPC Undergrad Newsletter, CPC Senior Newsletter, and CPC Alumni Newsletter.

This series contains various alumni surveys beginning with the class of 1976. The surveys in the 1970's and 1980's were done at the end of senior year and concern career plans. The bulk of the material consists of the original responses of the class of 1982 to a 1992 survey regarding the class of 1982's perception of the quality of the educational experience at Bowdoin. The results of the survey of the class of 1982 were used by the Office of Records and Research in a December 1992 report.

In 1989 the Association of Bowdoin Friends commissioned a survey of local business and professional people who were willing to discuss their career experiences with Bowdoin students who were considering that occupation after graduation. The survey asked for general information about the work and the educational background of the respondents. These replies were kept on file in the Career Services office for students to browse. It was up to the students to contact the individual respondents.
