Multicultural Programs and Affirmative Action Records, George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, Bowdoin College Library, Brunswick, Maine
The George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, like all archives and special collections libraries, is the creation of human beings who have collected, organized, and described things in ways that reflect personal, cultural, societal, and institutional biases. Although we strive to preserve and present collections in a manner that is respectful to the individuals and communities who create, use, and are represented in the collections, we acknowledge that our systems are neither neutral nor perfect. We encourage you to let us know if you encounter materials, descriptive language, or practices that are offensive or harmful, particularly those for which inadequate context or warning is offered. We are committed to modifying and updating our descriptive practices to use respectful and inclusive terminology and appreciate your help in this work. We look forward to supporting you in your research and learning together.
The position of Assistant to the President for Multicultural Programs and Affirmative Action Officer originated with the appointment of Gayle Renee Pemberton in 1988 to the position of Director of Minority Affairs. In 1990, the office was renamed and Faith Alyson Perry was appointed Acting Director of Multicultural Affairs. In 1991, Betty C. Thompson (Betty Trout-Kelly) became Assistant to the President for Multicultural Programs. In 1994, the position was again renamed to Assistant to the President for Multicultural Programs and Affirmative Action Officer and now reports directly to the president.
This office is responsible for administering programs and policies dealing with affirmative action and multicultural affairs. The college's Affirmative Action Officer (AAO) is responsible for monitoring the recruiting, retention, hiring and promotion process, as well as campus programs and committee agendas that serve to advance affirmative action for students and employees. The Affirmative Action Officer also functions as an information resource on affirmative action and equal opportunity and is responsible for the monitoring and assisting in the implementation of the Affirmative Action Plan (1996).
The records contain subject files from the office of the Assistant to the President for Multicultural Programs and Affirmative Action Officer dating from 1988. They contain information on programs, lecture series, budgets, and issues relating to multicultural and minority affairs at Bowdoin. Also included are articles on multicultural affairs and committee reports from the Oversight Committee on Multicultural Affairs.
