Biographical/Historical Note

The Office of Alumni Relations, currently a division of the Office of Development and Alumni Relations, is the liaison between the college and its alumni.


Scope and Content

This collection contains office files of the Office of Alumni Relations. Files include information on Alumni Club activities, reunions and reunion classes, as well as Alumni Council meetings. Copies of Bowdoin, the alumni magazine, and Whispering Pines are also included.

Collection Inventory

1.5.1: Alumni Council, 1857-   8.5 linear feet.

Series Description:

This series contains records of the Alumni Council. The Alumni Council was created in 1914. It is the governing body of the Bowdoin Alumni Association. The original council consisted of 12 members elected by a general ballot of the alumni. The first meeting, held in 1914 at Commencement, was chaired by Kenneth C.M. Sills '01, who was then Dean of the College. The records contain minutes of the council meetings, results of elections and general business papers. Also includes information about alumni events including homecomings, commencements, and reunions. Reunion synopses are filed in the fall meeting folder of the reunion year. For reunion and homecoming brochures dating from 1987 see Events Office: Academic Year Programs. Alumni Council manuals and handbooks, published sporadically, are located in the general folder for the specific year.

Series Description:

This series contains records of the Bowdoin Clubs. In 1989 there were sixty-two recognized Bowdoin Clubs throughout the United States and overseas. The Director of Alumni Relations oversees, but does not plan or coordinate Bowdoin Club activities. The clubs perform a variety of functions. They sponsor social and educational activities for alumni in their local area, and involve alumni in college service, especially in identifying and developing the interest of prospective students. The records document the activities of individual Bowdoin Clubs, particularly concerning visits from college personalities or Alumni Association officials. Also includes information on the Bowdoin Teachers Club.

Series Description:

This series contains the magazine for the Bowdoin Alumni. Includes articles by both alumni and college officials on matters which greatly concern the college. Also included are synopses of alumni events and occasional student input. News of the classes from class correspondents is reported in each issue. Published quarterly, the magazine has had three titles. From its inception in 1927 through 1983 it was called "The Bowdoin Alumnus." From 1984 through 1986 it was known as the "Bowdoin Alumni Magazine." In 1987 it was renamed simply "Bowdoin."

For awards presented at a special homecoming luncheon some correspondence regarding recipients can be found in Alumni Council homecoming files. The Alumni Award for Faculty and Staff, the Alumni Service Award, the Common Good Award, and the Distinguished Bowdoin Educator Award are among the awards for which there are copies of the actual certificates presented to recipients.

Series Description:

Alumni College began as a summer program that brought together alumni for a conference that offered various educational seminars. The most successful early Alumni College was a week-long program in the summer of 1965, but the program continued sporadically for 20 years before suspending operations. In 2002, Alumni College resumed, offering a week-long summer program for alumni anually centering on a particular topic or theme. Files contain records of Alumni College participants, brochures and correspondence among administrators. Also included are articles and information on alumni colleges at other institutions.

Sub-series Description:

The Whispering Pines publication was issued by the Alumni Fund from 1933-1955; its major feature being the Alumni Fund report. The first bound volume of The Whispering Pines includes Alumni Fund reports from 1920. In 1962 the format changed to an informal newsletter for parents and alumni concerning College events, necrologies, and College news of general interest. In 2007 the format changed again. After the March 2007 issue, The Whispering Pines ceased to be a separate publication, and became an essay at the back of each issue of Bowdoin magazine.
