Three Questions for Kelsey Berger ’15

Kelsey BergerQ. What is your favorite book?
I love Life of Pi by Yann Martel. I used to listen to the audiobook when I was younger, and it’s one of the few books I still carry around when I travel.

Q. What has been a favorite research project at Bowdoin?
In my first-year seminar we investigated the ways that the venom from poisonous animals could be used as the basis for new treatment in medical therapy, especially the treatment of severe chronic pain. It was fascinating to see how something so dangerous could, in a new context, become useful and desirable.  I remember being really surprised to find out that the major substance in Botox is chemically akin to the toxin that causes botulism.

Q. What is your favorite study space in the library?
A. I like to go to the carrels in the lower-level stacks. It’s a really great place to focus — it gets pretty quiet down there.

Three Questions for Karen Jung, Music Librarian

Karen JungQ. What is Your Favorite Book?

A. Working with the wonderful Bowdoin students, faculty, and staff and learning about something new every day.

Q. What is Your Favorite Restaurant/store/place in Brunswick?
A. Gelato Fiasco, the best gelato I have ever eaten.

Three Questions for Tyler Silver ’13

Tyler Silver

Q. What is your favorite book?
A. My favorite all-time book is Dune, by Frank Herbert. I think it is so good, I reread it every summer, without fail.

Q. What has been a favorite research project at Bowdoin?
A. My favorite research project at Bowdoin was for my History seminar. I researched the experiences of German Americans during World War II and after a few less-than-fruitful searches I finally found some great primary documents scattered around.

Q. What’s your favorite study space in the Library?
A. Hands down, my favorite study space is the 6th floor of Hubbard.  There is something serene and calming about the silence to me, and I know I cannot be distracted when I am at my carrel up in the stacks.

Three Questions for….

As one of the ways for you to get to know what current students at Bowdoin are reading and researching, we are featuring a weekly post called “Three Questions for…”.  Tyler is our first feature–look for a new one every week.  We will also include the staff at the library, asking them about their favorite books and places in Brunswick.  Enjoy!
