Interlibrary Loan

Policies and Guidelines

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is an international cooperative resource sharing service that provides Bowdoin College faculty, staff and students with material not available through the Library, NExpress or MaineCat.

Please search the Library catalog or CBBcat for books available at Bowdoin; search NExpress and MaineCat for holdings at regional libraries. Search Journal Titles for periodicals in print and online.

Forms to request articles, books, conference proceedings, dissertations, government documents and newspapers on microfilm are accessible from the Library’s electronic indexes and databases, or through your Interlibrary Loan User Account.

Loan periods for non-Bowdoin items

Articles are generally delivered electronically to your account within 3 days. They will remain accessible for 25 days.

Books, conference proceedings, dissertations, government documents, and newspapers on microfilm:

  • Generally arrive within 10 days
  • Loan period approximately 4 weeks
  • One renewal may be requested on or before the due date
  • Overdue items: Fine of $1.00/day may be assessed for each day past due; access to your account may be suspended if items are more than 14 days overdue

Items typically unavailable through Interlibrary Loan include audio-visual, archival material, computer software and periodicals. Please inquire about requesting scarce or unusual material, or if your research entails special circumstances.
