A valid Bowdoin ID card must be presented to borrow materials from the Hawthorne-Longfellow Library, Hatch Science Library, Pierce Art Library, or Robert K. Beckwith Music Library.

Summary of Loan Periods

For most books and government documents, loan periods are:

Bowdoin Students	Twenty-eight days, with three renewals. Students registered for Honors Projects or Independent Studies will be able to borrow books for an entire semester.
Bowdoin Staff	Six months
Reserve materials, periodicals, display books, audio cassettes, videorecordings, and compact discs circulate for shorter periods of time. Materials in the Art Library and the Language Media Center do not circulate.
Guests	Visitors without library cards may use, in-house, the book and periodical collections of the campus libraries; there is no charge for this access. Library cards are available for a fee of $35.00 per year ($15.00 per year for each additional family member) to adult residents of Brunswick and towns in the immediate vicinity. Applications are available at the Hawthorne-Longfellow Library Circulation Desk. Circulation staff will mail the card about one week after the application is received. Once they receive their library card, guest borrowers may use it to borrow circulating books and audiocassettes for two weeks, and dvd’s and videorecordings for one week.

Detailed Information About Loan Periods

Books and government documents may be recalled before their due date for use by another borrower or to be placed on reserve for a class. The original borrower may keep the item for two weeks before it can be recalled for another user, but items may be recalled for reserve at any time. Please check with Circulation at 725-3280 if you have questions about the recall policy.

Charges to students are not collected at the Library but are recorded at the Bursar’s Office for inclusion in billing by the College. Charges are made as follows:

Reserve books:
- 50₵ per hour for the first six hours past due
- 25₵ for each subsequent hour the Library is open
- After the first day, the charge is at least $3.00 per day
- $1.00 per hour for overdue laptops borrowed from the Reserve Desk
Books with one-month loan periods, DVDs & Videos, Audiobooks, Recalled Books, Periodicals & Interlibrary Loans:
- $1.00 per day
Replacement Charges:
- Materials that are extremely overdue will be billed for replacement costs plus a $25.00 processing fee, plus any applicable overdue fines. “Overdue” can range from just a few days for a Reserve item, up to one month for a regular checked-out book.
- Charges for lost materials belonging to non-Bowdoin libraries will vary.
- Please report lost items to the Circulation Desk as soon as possible; to avoid accruing overdue fines.
