Catalog Search Tips: Finding Music Materials

There are three methods by which you can search for music materials:

  1. From the initial dropdown menu, select Music Scores, CDs/LPs/Tapes, or Videos/DVDs depending on the format of material you wish to find; select the search type from the second dropdown menu; enter search term(s) in the box. For example:

    Do you have any Bob Dylan CDs?
    Select "CDs/LPs/Tapes" from the dropdown menu; search Dylan, Bob as an author

    Do you have the musical score for Falstaff?
    Select "Music Scores" from the dropdown menu; search Falstaff as title

    Be aware that some titles commonly known in English may also be found in their original language:
    Examples:
    • Well Tempered Clavier = Wohltemperierte Klavier
    • Marriage of Figaro = Nozze de Figaro

    To search titles which include music numbers or keys, choose Music Scores, CDs/LPs/Tapes, or Videos/DVDs from the first dropdown menu and Keyword from the second, and use a phrase with quotes:

  2. The Alternate Call Number (Alt Call #) index provides an easy way to browse specific types of music materials, including some periods and genres.

     

    For a complete list of CDs, use the search term cd; qualify the search term by genre to further limit the search. Genres include:

    cd medieval cd jazz
    cd renaissance cd popular
    cd baroque cd musical
    cd classical cd ethno
    cd romantic cd USethno
    cd modern cd general (2 or more genres)

    Browse for LPs by using the search term lp. Genres include only lp ethno.

     

    Browse for music videos by using the search term video or laser.

     

    A search on the term choral retrieves a list of choral performance music.

     

    Use the Limit/Sort option to further narrow the results of any search by Words in the Author (composer), Title, or Subject, by Language, by Year of publication, etc.

  3. The Subject index provides easy searching for Performance Music (music with parts) by the following genre categories (be sure to Limit/Sort your search results by Where Item is Located: Music Performance):

     

    Use the Limit/Sort option to further narrow the results of any search by Words in the Author (composer), Title, or Subject, by Language, by Year of publication, etc.
