Music in the Library Series

The Music in the Library Concert Series was founded in the fall of 1995 by Matthew Kuhrt, class of 1997. Matt wanted to find a small, intimate relaxed setting where students could perform in ensembles or solo, music on which they are currently working. The newly renovated Music Library with good acoustics was just such a space for a concert series, which would bring more students, staff and faculty into the Music Building and the Library. There are four concerts a year are held on Saturdays at noon: Parents Weekend Concert in September, Early Winter Concert in November, Winter Weekend Concert in February, and a Spring Concert in April.

International Bowdoin Summer Music Festival

Bowdoin College is privileged to be the site of the International Bowdoin Summer Music Festival. Professor Beckwith, for whom the library was named, and Lewis Kaplan were co-founders of the festival. This six week program, established in 1965, attracts music students from around the world. The Music Library serves the needs of the summer music students by providing scores and listening facilities.
