Introduction

The purpose of this guide is to identify resources both in the Library and online with biographical, critical and cultural information that will help you with your class assignments. Research Strategies

The materials in this guide have been selected because they provide comprehensive, current information and represent good starting points for your work. Another great source is the library catalog. You will find information aboiut LGBT authors by searching the keyword index for their names. Once you've found a book that matches what you're looking for, you may find more relevant sources by clicking on the subject links in the record. Here are some examples of good searches:

The gay and lesbian literary heritage : a reader's companion to the writers and their works, from antiquity to the present / Claude J. Summers, editor (in H-L Reference collection: Main Ref PN56.H57 G365 2002)

glbtq: an encyclopedia of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer culture (web site based on The Gay and Lesbian Literary Heritage, noted above)

Contemporary lesbian writers of the United States : a bio-bibliographical critical sourcebook / edited by Sandra Pollack and Denise D. Knight (in H-L Reference collection: Main Ref PS153.L46 C65 1993)

Encyclopedia of pulp fiction writers / Lee Server (in H-L Reference collection: PS374.P63 S45 2002)

Duke University Lesbian Pulp Fiction Collection (web site for the collection, including a significant list of lesbian pulp fiction authors' works with descriptions)

MLA International Bibliography (for articles, chapters in books, etc. online citation database available via Library web site)

Finding Images

Here are a few places to look for images of authors and other public figures.

Main Page - Wikimedia Commons (Wikimedia Commons provides images in the public domain)

Yahoo! Image Search (Includes more images than Wikimedia Commons, but many are commercial)

Google Images (Similar to Yahoo!)

NY Public Library Digital Library (web site contains public domain historical images - think Christopher St., Stonewall, etc)

Queer Picture Gallery - U. Maryland Philosophy Course - (web site of a course at UMD, contains a small collection of relevant images)

There are lots of great resource on LGBT history. Here are a few of the best:

Gay rights / Rachel Kranz, Tim Cusick (This book is at the top of the list because it includes a great timeline of LGBT contemporary history, as well as an annotated bibliography leading to more resources: On reserve: HQ76.8.U5 K73 2005)

Completely queer : the Gay and Lesbian encyclopedia Steve Hogan and Lee Hudson (good general encyclopedia with a 74-page chronology, in H-L Reference Collection: Main Ref HQ75 .H63 1998)

Making history : the struggle for gay and lesbian equal rights, 1945-1990 : an oral history / Eric Marcus (interviews with stakeholders and major players in the movement, a useful primary source: On Reserve: HQ76.8.U5 M36 1992)

Out for good : the struggle to build a gay rights movement in America / Dudley Clendinen and Adam Nagourney (good post-Stonewall history of the movement: On reserve: HQ76.8.U5 C58 1999)

Timetable of Gay and Lesbian History (web site based on the timetable in the Pink Pages, heavily centered on the UK, but inclusive of some American events)

The gay decades : from Stonewall to the present : the people and events that shaped gay lives / Leigh W. Rutledge (day-by-day, from June 22, 1969 - Dec. 31, 1990, a detailed chronology: On reserve: HQ76.8.U5 R88 1992)
