Ecological Economics and Sustainable Development

Professor: David Vail ( )
Librarian: Carr Ross ( )
Fall 2004

The purpose of this guide is to identify library and Web resources that will help you with your clean energy technologies project. If you have questions feel free to contact Carr (x3545 or cross@bowdoin.edu) or call the Library Reference Desk at x3227.

Magazines, Newspapers and Journals

Search these library databases for articles on all topics: energy policies; emissions; new & existing technologies; funding; consumption. These databases will be especially good for costs and benefits of technologies. For databases without full text, check the Find Journals tool to see if the Bowdoin Library subscribes to the journal.

For current, up-to-date information:

For a more scholarly, but less current, look at environmental and energy issues:

Energy Policies & Strategies

Meeting Greenhouse Gas Reduction Commitments

  • The European Environment Agency (EEA) collects environmental data for the European Union. There is a host of useful information at its Web site. Relevant selections follow. (You may have trouble opening some of the .pdf files at the EEA. If you do have trouble, save the file first to your computer, then open it.)

Energy Consumption and Reserves

  • Energy Reserves (from International Energy Annual, 2002, U.S. Energy Information Agency)
    -includes China and EU countries
  • World Energy Consumption (from International Energy Annual, 2002, U.S. Energy Information Agency)
    -China and EU countries
  • Energy - Yearly Statistics (from Statistical Office of the European Communities)
-includes energy consumption, production, efficiency, etc. for EU-25, EU-15 and individual countries
  • World Development Indicators
-World Bank database contains figures on energy use, GDP per unit of energy use, and production for China and the EU

Technologies

  • U.S. Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
-does an excellent job of describing technologies (biomass, wind, geothermal, etc.) and serving as a gateway to government sources (domestic & international), universities & research institutes, trade & nonprofit groups, international organizations, etc. for each technology

Subsidies, Government Support, and Funding for Renewable Energy

  • EU-China Energy and Environment Programme ("cancel" the pop-up window about installing a language pack)
-"established by a financing agreement between the European Commission and China's Ministry of Commerce"
