This guide provides a collection of information sources useful for research in this class. If you have questions about any aspect of your research, please consult the librarians at the reference desk or Leanne Pander at lpander@bowdoin.edu or x3260.
RESEARCH STRATEGY
For help with starting a research project, searching for source material, and presenting your research, plus basic information about the Library, see the Getting Started web page.
Remember: no one library owns everything! If a book is not available at Bowdoin, check Maine Info Net and NExpress to see the holdings of other large libraries in New England and to place a request online. For books not available through these services and for periodical articles not available at Bowdoin, use Interlibrary Loan. You don't have to tell us who owns the material; we'll find it for you. Please allow one to two weeks for delivery.
LIBRARY CATALOG
The Library Catalog section of the Library Gateway is the primary instrument for accessing the collections of the Bowdoin College Libraries. Included are bibliographic records for books, periodical titles, Archives materials, videorecordings, sound recordings, Special Collections materials, and a portion of the government documents collection.
In the Library Catalog, you may search for an item by its Author (including editors, illustrators, translators, and corporate authors); Title (including series titles and alternate titles); or one of several other access points, such as call number or words in title. For best results in Subject searching, use the standardized subject headings found in the large red Library of Congress Subject Headings books. Sometimes, searching by Word will turn up references you would not have found easily by subject, especially with "jargon" words or new terms.
The general call number range for Women's Studies is HQ 1101-2030.7. Other areas of interest would be D500-D800 for materials on the First and Second World War, DS921 for the Korean War, and DS557-559 for the Vietnam War. The topics for this class are so interdisciplinary that many other areas of the collection will contain relevant sources; it's important to use the Library Catalog, in conjunction with browsing the shelves.
Some suggested Subject Headings are listed below; there are many others relevant to this course!
| Aggressiveness | Reconciliation |
| Antinuclear Movement | Violence |
| Comfort Women | War and Society |
| Korean War, 1950-1953 | Women and the Military |
| Peace | Women and War |
| Peace Movements | World War, 1914-1918--Women |
PERIODICALS, PRINT AND ELECTRONIC
Periodical titles are listed in the Library Catalog. Periodicals (which may also be called journals, magazines, or serials) are shelved alphabetically by title. Unbound issues (generally, just the current year) are located on the first floor. Back issues are bound and shelved in the basement level of the Library.
Individual articles are not listed in the Library Catalog, but you may
use the Library Gateway to connect to a variety of periodical indexes,
described below. These are searchable by subject, author, keyword, etc.,
and contain citations, abstracts, and sometimes the full text of articles.
The full text of many periodicals and newspapers may be found in electronic
format, either as a "stand-alone" title or as part of a large
database such as Academic Search Premier. Use the Journals
search on the Library Gateway to identify print and electronic titles
available at Bowdoin's library. If we do not own the journal you need,
use Interlibrary Loan to order a copy of an article.
INDEXES/DATABASES
These sources provide subject and author access to articles in periodicals and other current publications. They differ in the selection of journals covered and in the way they present their information. Although some duplication will be found among the various indexes, it is worthwhile to try several for a thorough literature search on any topic.
The indexes listed below are accessed electronically through the Library Gateway "Indexes/Databases" section.
- Academic Search Premier
- Academic Search Premier indexes over 4,000 journals in the social sciences, humanities and science, as well as general interest magazines and several important American newspapers. Date coverage varies; some periodicals are indexed as far back as 1980. Contains many full-text articles.
- Alternative Press Index
1991-present
1969-1990 - Indexes over 250 "alternative and radical" publications, which are seldom included in "mainstream" indexes. Focus is on social, political, and cultural activism; sustainable environments; gay and lesbian issues; native peoples; seniors; and women. Does not include ultra-conservative viewpoints.
- America History and Life 1964+
- This scholarly bibliographic source indexes articles, books and dissertations about the history of the United States and Canada published throughout the world. Provides citations and abstracts for the works indexed.
- Contemporary Women's Issues 1992+
- A full-text database with articles from 1,500 journals, newsletters and research reports containing information on women in over 190 countries. An international mix of mainstream and alternative press publications with coverage of social sciences, psychology, human rights, the arts, health, education, business administration, and political science.
- Ethnic Newswatch 1990+
- News, culture, and history from over 200 publications of the Ethnic, Minority, and Native Press. An excellent source for alternative viewpoints. Full text of articles may be displayed in English or Spanish.
- Gender Studies Database 1972+
- Covers the full spectrum of gender scholarship and includes several thousand links to freely available and indexed full-text articles. Source documents include professional journals, conference papers, books, book chapters, government reports, discussion and working papers, theses & dissertations, websites and other sources. Extensive coverage of women’s studies, men’s studies, and sexual diversity issues.
- Lexis/Nexis Academic
- Contains the full text of articles from worldwide newspapers, magazines, news wires and trade journals. Starting dates vary for different publications; current information is updated daily. Most coverage extends back about ten to twenty-five years.
SELECTED WORLD WIDE WEB SITES
Not all websites are created equal! The Web is an electronic repository for books, data collections, encyclopedias, libraries, and any disparate piece of text, graphic, or sound byte that someone chose to put online. And some of it is inaccurate, biased, out of date, shallow, and inappropriate for academic use.
For help in appraising web sources, see Evaluating WWW Sources.
