Non-Electronic Reserves
Because reserve reading is critical to many classes and is one of the
most heavily used library services, please be aware of the lead time necessary
to place items on reserve. If you have any questions or special needs,
please contact library staff listed below.
General Information
- Because of the large number of reserve items received at the beginning
of the semester, it may take 2-4 days to process reserve lists, and 7 days
to process electronic reserves. Materials needed for the first week of classes
should be submitted at least two weeks prior to the beginning of classes.
- To ensure that we assign the correct priority to all reserves, please
fill in the date by which each item is needed for reserve. (Please do not
just write "ASAP!")
- Reserve lists and materials may be delivered to the Reserve Desk of the
Hawthorne-Longfellow Library or the Hatch Science Library at any time.
- Because of severe space limitations, we ask that these materials be restricted
to required readings, rather than suggested or casual readings.
- Please give us a copy of your syllabus. We need it to accurately match
titles and dates, and to answer your students' questions.

Books
- Circulating library books or your personal copies
may be placed on reserve. Please speak with a
reference librarian if you wish to place a reference
book on reserve.
- If the library does not own a needed book, please
order it through Technical Services, and indicate
"RESERVE" on the order form. The same
holds true for extra copies of a book the library
already owns. Please allow at least four weeks
for receipt of any new book! ! It is acceptable
to order a book for Bowdoin Reserve even if it
is already held at Bates or Colby.
- Books from Colby and Bates (no other libraries!)
may be placed on Reserve temporarily while you
are waiting for a new book order to arrive. PLEASE
ASK CIRCULATION STAFF TO REQUEST THE BOOK FROM
COLBY OR BATES; DO NOT REQUEST IT IN YOUR NAME.
- If a book owned by the library is missing, the
library staff will notify you and will order a
replacement.
- To speed up reserve processing, it would be
helpful if you would pull library books from the
shelves when you submit your reserve book lists.

Photocopies: Periodical Articles and Book Chapters
Copyright and Fair Use
The Library adheres to the Fair Use Guidelines of United States Copyright Law
(Title 17, USC, Sect. 101, et seq.). If a reserve reading is determined to fall
outside of Fair Use Guidelines, the Library will seek permission to use the material
for electronic or print reserve. If the copyright holder denies permission to
use the material for reserve, the Library will notify you and remove the reading.
Please indicate on the reserve submission form the maximum cost (up to $75) that
you wish the Library to pay if there are charges for permission.
Please call the Circulation staff if you have any questions about copyright
requirements for reserve readings. Also, for more information about copyright
law, see our web page, Copyright Policy for
Print and Electronic Reserves.
Submitting Photocopies
- Please provide the Library with all needed photocopies of articles and book
chapters. These are your property, and will be returned to you at the end of the
semester.
- Multiple copies (up to 1 copy per 10 students) may be placed on reserve.
- To facilitate seeking of copyright permissions (when necessary), and to ensure
that students have full information for citing these readings, photocopies must
be accompanied by the complete bibliographic citation of the book or journal article.

Videorecordings and DVD's
- Videos and DVD's from the Hawthorne-Longfellow Library or any branch library,
or your personal copies, if they were taped within copyright guidelines, may be
placed on reserve.
- Two viewing rooms are available for showing videos and DVD's to an entire
class. To reserve the Video and DVD Viewing Room in the Hawthorne-Longfellow Library,
call Phyllis McQuaide at the Circulation Desk, x3280; to reserve the viewing room
in Sills Hall, contact Carmen Greenlee at the Language Media Center, x3702.
- Indicate on the Video and DVD Reserve form the date and time the video or
DVD will be shown. We will hold the video or DVD for you at the Circulation Desk
for 24 hours prior to viewing.
- Videos and DVD's may be restricted to in-library use only; please check "restricted
use" on the form. Individual viewing stations are available in Hawthorne-Longfellow
and the Hatch Science Library.
