Sula
by Toni Morrison

Sula is a book by Toni Morrison set in a Southern atmosphere post-slavery. It is centered around two friends, Sula and Nel, who are polar opposites of each other base on their upbringings. Nel was raised in a conventional home with values to match, while Sula lives with her mother and her grandmother in a very free lifestyle. As children, a tragedy drives the two girls apart and over time, they choose separate paths. After many years, the girls physically reunite, but it is not until the death of one that the other is able to forgive her friend and herself for the tragedy of their past. I love this book because it shows how people's values and ideas can possess them if they are not careful. It is also a constant reminder that we must always look at both sides of a story before choosing a heroine or villain.
