Often times in epic fantasy series there is an ultimate evil that people must unite against in order to defeat. Beings such as Sauron in Lord of the Rings, the Dark One in the Wheel of Time and Game of Thrones are evil in their entirety and those who are good must unite in order to defeat them. This series struck me because it lacks this theme. The moral dilemmas and grey areas are everywhere, and knowing who is evil and who is good becomes muddled. The books in the Malazan Book of the Fallen series, by Steven Erikson, are epic, sweeping stories that describe the interactions of empires, gods, and individuals within several fictional worlds. The characters are fully developed and the storyline is immersive. Simply put, it is one of my favorite series, and I urge you to give the series a shot.
