Periodical Indexes for Art

There are several periodical index sources for research in art and art history. They are available in both electronic and print format, depending on which index you choose. See the Indexes/Databases section of the Library Web Page.

Art Index Retrospective
Indexing of hundreds of publications. Includes citations to peer-reviewed articles, interviews and books reviews. Covers fine, decorative, and commercial art. International in scope. Covers 1929-1984.
Art Abstracts
This index to periodical literature for art covers 1984-present. If you need to search for articles prior to 1984, please use the print version of the index which is located in the Indexes section of Hawthorne-Longfellow Library, on the first floor. It covers 1929-1994.
Arts & Humanities Citation Index
This database covers 1980-present. It is less useful strictly for art-related research, though it is useful for interdisciplinary research. It is not a full-text database.
ARTstor
ARTstor is a growing repository of 300,000+ digital images and related data supporting interdisciplinary studies with special emphasis on collections of art, architecture, and archeology.
Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals Online
Covers 1934 - present, with selective coverage back to 1741. It is not a full-text database.
BHA (Bibliography of the History of Art)
1973 - present. Covers art-related books, conference proceedings, dissertations, exhibitions, dealer catalogs, and articles.
Grove Art Online
Global coverage provides detailed analysis of the arts of Asia, Africa, the Americas, the Pacifi,c and Europe
JSTOR
Digitalized backfiles of scholarly journals; recent issues are not available through this database.
Academic Search Premier
Though this is a more general subject index, searches for newspaper articles about major events--Art Events, Museums, Contemporary Artists, Etc.--are successful. This database includes a mix of citations and full-text material covering articles between 1980 and the present.
New York Times

Useful for reviews of exhibitions, of up and coming artists, or for researching the New York 'Art Scene.'
