Thomas Curtis Van Cleve Papers, George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, Bowdoin College Library, Brunswick, Maine
The George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, like all archives and special collections libraries, is the creation of human beings who have collected, organized, and described things in ways that reflect personal, cultural, societal, and institutional biases. Although we strive to preserve and present collections in a manner that is respectful to the individuals and communities who create, use, and are represented in the collections, we acknowledge that our systems are neither neutral nor perfect. We encourage you to let us know if you encounter materials, descriptive language, or practices that are offensive or harmful, particularly those for which inadequate context or warning is offered. We are committed to modifying and updating our descriptive practices to use respectful and inclusive terminology and appreciate your help in this work. We look forward to supporting you in your research and learning together.
Thomas Curtis Van Cleve was born on May 1, 1888, in Malden, Missouri. He received an A.B. (1911) and A.M. (1912) from the University of Missouri and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. Van Cleve taught history and political science at Bowdoin College from 1915 until his retirement in 1954, at which time he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters degree. His main fields of teaching and research were the Middle Ages, English constitutional history, and the history of political theory. His teaching career was interrupted by his military service in World War I and World War II as an intelligence officer.
Van Cleve was the author of Markward of Anweiler and the Sicilian Regency (1937), The Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen: Immutator Mundi (1972) and an unpublished memoir, "Observations and Experiences of an Intelligence Officer in Two World Wars." He was a contributing author to A History of the Crusades, volume two (1962), and wrote articles for American Historical Review, Speculum, and other journals.
Thomas Curtis Van Cleve died on February 10, 1976, in Brunswick, Maine, survived by a nephew, Dr. J. Thomas Van Cleve, and two nieces, Mrs. Mary M. Jackson and Mrs. Vera L. Bay.
The bulk of the collection consists of Van Cleve's manuscripts and other material related to his writings, however lecture notes, correspondence, biographical and military material, and photographs are also included.
The earlier correspondence in this series is related to Van Cleve's military service, particularly efforts prior to World War II on Van Cleve's part to be reinstated in Military Intelligence at his previous rank. More extensive military materials can be found in series M230.2. The remaining correspondence deals predominantly with either Van Cleve's retirement from teaching in 1954 or with the publication of Van Cleve's book, The Emperor Frederick II of Hoenstaufen: Immutator Mundi, in 1972.
