Correspondence Concerning the Petition of Theophilus P. Chandler, 1863-1882
1 linear foot.
Catalog Number: M29.1.2
|
Series Description:
Theophilus P. Chandler, the brother of Peleg W. Chandler, was Assistant
Treasurer of the United States, at the subtreasury in Boston, from 1863 to
1868. In 1867 a subordinate, Julius F. Hartwell, illegally loaned money
from the subtreasury. This correspondence concerns efforts, largely on
the part of Peleg W. Chandler, to pass a bill in congress that would
relieve T.P. Chandler of any liability in the matter. The bulk of the
correspondence is between Peleg W. Chandler and W.L. Putnam. In addition,
there are letters to and from: Parker C. Chandler, A.S. Wheeler, John G.
Abbot, and other involved parties. Material regarding the estates of J.
Wiley Edmands and Horatio Woodman, who were apparently trying to claim a
similar immunity is included. There are a series of affidavits concerning
T.P. Chandler's petition, various printed copies of the petition, as well
as of similar petitions and cases that had been brought to Congress, plus
newspaper clippings related to the petition. Also included (located at
the end of the series) are three unrelated letters to W.L. Putnam (1908,
1909), and one unrelated letter from Horace Chandler(1909).
Arrangement:Chronological, and by author with material other than
letters at the back.
