Correspondence, 1820-1864 (bulk 1839-1864); primarily outgoing letters
from Hawthorne to friends and associates. Includes a substantial
number of letters from Hawthorne (sometimes written with his wife,
Sophia) to Horatio Bridge, a classmate at Bowdoin College and lifelong
friend. Also of note is an exchange between Hawthorne and another
classmate, Jonathan Cilley, betting on Hawthorne's future existence
as a bachelor.
