| Agency History / Biographical Note:
In 1937, Donald Baxter MacMillan commanded
a 72-day Arctic expedition aboard the "Gertrude L. Thebaud," travelling
to Labrador, Frobisher Bay, and Baffin Land. The crew was made up
of college students and professors from Bowdoin, New York University,
Kirksville College, and other institutions; one high school student;
the ship's captain, John T. Crowell; and a few seasoned sailors.
Dedicated to research and collection, the expedition returned with
extensive samples of Arctic flora and a collection of bird skins,
studied the geography of Resolution Island, and explored the Baffin
Island ice caps and other land masses.
The "Thebaud" expedition was MacMillan's 16th Arctic voyage.
Scope and Content:
The collection contains letters, journals, ship's log, ornithological
notes, articles and addresses, photographs, lists, and clippings,
all relating to the voyage and written by various crew members.
The gift was made by the 1937 Thebaud crew as part of their 50th
reunion, held in 1987. MacMillan's record of the trip is with his
papers.
