Series Description:
This series contains correspondence both to and from Hilton Kramer. Because Kramer's personal and professional lives intertwine, letters often contain both personal and professional content. While the letters reflect a myriad of topics, many letters request Kramer's participation in events or solicit writings for publication; some small number include his replies. There are a number of letters written to Kramer upon his resignation from the New York Times. There is frequent correspondence with a small number of close friends of Kramer including Joseph Epstein, Stanley Burnshaw, and Daniel Curley.

Kramer had a long friendship with the writer Josephine Herbst and served as executor of her estate (both personal and literary) upon her death in 1969. There are numerous letters between Kramer and Herbst, as well as letters between Kramer and various individuals with interests in Herbst's estate.

Arrangement: Arranged chronologically.

Restrictions: None.

Series Description:
This series contains exhibition catalogs, slides, press releases, photographs, and articles. Presumably, much of the information in the files reflects research for articles written by Kramer (some of these articles may be found in the Writings series). The subject files also contain many photographic prints of artwork and a number of files relating to Josephine Herbst, both under her own name and under the name of her biographer, Elinor Langer. There are also scattered materials of a more biographical nature, including Kramer's curriculum vitae and a few brief travel diaries. Also included are manuscripts of other writers that Kramer was asked to read.

Arrangement: Arranged alphabetically by name or topic.

Restrictions: None.

Series Description:
This series primarily comprises manuscript, typescript, telex, and clipped articles written by Hilton Kramer, as well as research materials presumably used by Kramer as background. There are also some of Kramer's essays and notes from his post-graduate work at the Indiana University as well as the proposal for and drafts of The Twilight of the Intellectuals (Chicago, 1999). There is some duplication between drafts and clippings of articles in this series and newspaper clippings found in the series Newspaper Clippings (M252.4). Also includes: The New Criterion, Hilton Kramer, 1928-2012, Special memorial issue.

Arrangement: Arranged alphabetically by topic or title.

The bulk of the clippings consist of the New York Times Archives, which appear to contain all of Kramer's articles published by the New York Times from 1967 through 1982. Also included are clippings of Kramer's writings for the New York Times prior to 1967. Additionally there are articles written by Kramer for the American Scholar, the Washington Times, the New Republic, the National Review, the New York Review of Books, the Weekly Standard, the New York Observer, the Nation, the Saturday Review, Newsweek, Arts and Antiques, the Washington Post, Commentary, Esquire, Modern Painters, and Arts magazine.
