Agency History / Biographical Note:
Charles Oliver Hunt was born April 6 1839 in Gorham, Maine. He graduated
Phi Beta Kappa from Bowdoin College in 1861, where he was a member of
the Peucinian Society and Alpha Delta Phi. He joined the Union Army upon
his graduation in 1861, serving as a sergeant in the 5th Maine Battery.
Hunt was made lieutenant in 1863. After the war, he graduated from the
Bowdoin Medical School (1867) and received his M.D. from the University
of Pennsylvania in 1868. Hunt was superintendant of the Maine General
Hospital from 1874 to 1902. He was a physician in Gorham from 1868 to
1869, and then in Portland from 1869 until his death in 1909. Hunt received
a masters degree from Bowdoin in 1887. He was president of the Maine Medical
Association in 1899. Hunt died July 24, 1909, in Scarborough, Maine.
Scope and Content:
Comprised of holograph transcriptions of correspondence and memoirs of
Charles O. Hunt documenting his service in the Civil War, including the
second battle of Manasass, the Wilderness Campaign, and Gettysburg, as
well his internment as a prisoner of war at Hilton Head, South Carolina
and Danville, Virginia.
Hunt mentions numerous aquaintances throughout the two volumes, including
those made during his Bowdoin College years (such as Samuel Fessenden).
Correspondents include his mother, his brother, Henry Hastings Hunt, and
other Maine acquaintances; and also General Johnson Hagood with whom Hunt
carried on a post-bellum correspondence concerning his internment under
Hagood's command. Also includes photographs, currency notes, signed orders
and other documents, and brochures concerning a memorial at Gettysburg
battle-field.
