Charles Everett Ranlett Papers, George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, Bowdoin College Library, Brunswick, Maine.
The George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, like all archives and special collections libraries, is the creation of human beings who have collected, organized, and described things in ways that reflect personal, cultural, societal, and institutional biases. Although we strive to preserve and present collections in a manner that is respectful to the individuals and communities who create, use, and are represented in the collections, we acknowledge that our systems are neither neutral nor perfect. We encourage you to let us know if you encounter materials, descriptive language, or practices that are offensive or harmful, particularly those for which inadequate context or warning is offered. We are committed to modifying and updating our descriptive practices to use respectful and inclusive terminology and appreciate your help in this work. We look forward to supporting you in your research and learning together.
Captain Charles Everett Ranlett (1816-1917) was a master mariner of Thomaston, Maine. He built and owned the schooner, Nautilus, that was chartered in 1860 by Professor Paul Chadbourne of Williams College for a scientific expedition to Greenland.
Copies of thirty items, mostly letters from Professor Paul Chadbourne (sent while he was a visiting professor at Bowdoin College) to Captain Charles Everett Ranlett. The correspondence concerns arrangements for the Williams College Lyceum of Natural History expedition to Greenland in 1860. Expedition members included seventeen college students (eleven from Williams College, three from Bowdoin College, two from Harvard College and one from Columbia College). The collection also includes rosters of expedition members and letters from Admiral McClintock to Captain Ranlett in 1896-1897. See also the 1860 entries in Reminiscences by Simeon A. Evans (Bowdoin Class of 1860).
