Description:
The Mitchell Papers staff individually cataloged most of the larger format
prints in a database containing
almost 1,600 photographs. These photographs were taken during George Mitchell's
Senate career from 1980 through 1994. They include prints, contact sheets,
and negatives. Mitchell's Senate staff kept prints and contact sheets
in binders. Over 100 photographs were framed. They kept some small format
prints and most negatives in cardfile boxes. A large portion of the photographs
was taken at functions and events. Generally they are set in the Senator's
office, the Capitol, the White House, on trips to other states and countries,
congressional committee hearings, such as the Joint Committee
to Investigate the Iran-Contra Affair, or meetings with congressional
leaders, Presidents Bush and Clinton, and other government officials.
After Mitchell was elected Majority Leader, the photographs document
visits from heads of state and religious leaders including the Dalai Lama
of Tibet, Prime Minister Major and Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom,
President Mitterand of France, Presidents Gorbachov and Yeltsin of Russia,
President Havel of the Czech Republic, Prime Ministers Begin and Rabin
of Israel, King Hussein of Jordan, Chairman Arafat of the PLO, Chancellor
Kohl of Germany, Prime Minister Mulroney of Canada, and others. There
are many photographs of Senator Mitchell with constituents; however, most
of the constituent names are not documented and therefore were not cataloged
individually. These photographs are arranged by year. The majority are
unframed.
