Description:
This series contains a complete set of released
statements arranged chronologically with a title
index, dating from 1980 through 1994. Types of
items released for public consumption were
statements from Mitchell's Senate office, joint
statements from the Maine congressional
delegation, statements called "Exclusive for
Weeklies," guest columns, press availability
notices, press conferences, and speeches. Press
releases were used by the office for a variety of
purposes: to advise the public on or explain
positions Mitchell was taking; to publicize or
discuss legislation; to announce major
initiatives related to subjects such as trade,
taxes, transportation, and health care; to
announce special events, job promotions, or major
accomplishments; to release general policy
statements; to celebrate newly authorized or
reauthorized programs; or to administer
criticisms or persuasive appeals to Congress or
the President.
