Description:
Material in this series was generated from 1980 through 1994. Materials
include memo, notes, correspondence (much from labor unions and corporations),
reports, testimonies from hearings, press clippings, and journal articles.
Files on significant labor disputes include the 1987 to 1988 International
Paper Company strike, which deal with permanent replacement workers and
the striking United Paperworkers International Union and the Brotherhood
of Firemen and Oilers. Other subjects include federal employees; job training
programs; occupational health and safety; unions; pension plans for workers,
especially federal employees; and railroads. Files on railroad labor disputes,
particularly the Guilford Transportation Industries, strike are in the
Railroad series. Government
agencies and committees featured in this series include the Labor Department,
the National Labor Relations Board, the Occupational Safety and Health
Administration, and the Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources.
Significant unions featured include the AFL-CIO and United Auto Workers.
Significant legislation found in these files includes the Davis-Bacon
Act, which regulates wages; the Job Training Partnership Act; the Workplace
Fairness Act, which prohibits the hiring of permanent replacement workers
during a strike; and the Hatch Act, which regulates the political activities
of federal employees. The Governmental Affairs
series contains additional information on federal employees and the Hatch
Act.
Robert Carolla created and maintained most of the files before 1992.
Peggy Dorothy took over and maintained these files from 1992 through 1994.
She created most of the files generated during this time. Other staff
members who generated files included Mary McAleney, Sandy Brown, Chris
Deering, Jeff Peterson, and Clyde McDonald. Some material on the Eastern
Airlines strike is in the Aviation series.
Access Restrictions: Restricted until January 5, 2015.
