Background Note:
Senator Mitchell dealt with Maine defense issues throughout his tenure
in office. Military bases and defense contractors are among the largest
employers in Maine. Senator Mitchell's office kept close track of defense
spending and its effect on Maine's economy. From the late 1980s through
the early 1990's as the nation reduced its armed forces with the end of
the cold war, defense bases in Maine faced closure and defense contractors
faced sharply reduced sales. A large portion of this series concerns the
shutting down of Loring Air Force Base in northern Maine during the 1990s.
With a reduced military force, Senator Mitchell took steps to help the
national and Maine economy adjust to the loss of defense industry revenue.
Description:
Files in this series were generated from 1980 through 1994. Materials
include memos, notes, correspondence, reports, and press clippings. Many
files concern the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, the Brunswick Naval Air Station,
and the closing of the Loring Air Force Base. Files also document events
at Bath Iron Works and Saco Defense, among other contractors. Some files
cover the development of several defense budgets. Most of the files were
maintained and created by Robert Carolla. Many files were created by Brett
O'Brien and Mary LeBlanc. This series contains many files that are related
to the Local Development series.
