Description:
Files in this series were created from 1985 through 1994. Materials include
memos, notes, correspondence, reports, and press clippings. This series
contains a wide variety of development projects in Maine. Some include
safety projects run by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA), the development of the Bates Mill in Lewiston, Maine, the helping
of the Edwards Corporation in Pittsfield, Maine, the St. John's River
irrigation project, and some research projects concerning universities
in Maine, particularly the University of Southern Maine. There are some
files on relief assistance for several natural disasters in Maine, along
with several projects concerning harbor dredging and coastal improvements,
including the Camp Ellis Beach project. These files contain material on
the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Army Corps of Engineers,
respectively. Additional information concerns local development projects
for Native American tribes in Maine, including the Penobscot Indians and
the Passamaquoddy Tribe's development of "waste-to-energy" technology.
Some of these files were created by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Some
files concern the Small Business Administration, the Economic Development
Administration, and the Senate Committee on Commerce. Sandy Brown created
and maintained most of these files. Some files were created by Grace Reef.
Many of the files on Native Americans were created by Jeff Sanders, Christine
Williams, and Chris Mann. Some files were created and maintained by Patrick
Maxcy.
Most case and project files are in the Constituent Services series.
Most significant special projects or issues in Maine are in the Legislative
series according to their subject. For example, the Loring Air Force base
redevelopment project is found in Defense, and the Guilford
rail strike is in the Railroad series. Project files in
this series are generally smaller than the other local project and issue
files that are located within the Legislative series by subject. Additional
files on OSHA may be found in the Labor series and additional
files on Native Americans may be found in the Land
Use series.
Access Restrictions: Restricted until January 3, 2015.
