Description:
Records in this series reflect the concise results of staff research in
1973 and 1974. They include briefing books on Republican candidate James
Erwin's statements, voting record, and a contributors' list to Erwin's
1970 campaign for governor. Also included are Mitchell's press releases,
statements, position papers, and notes on such issues as tax reform, energy,
and fishing. Mitchell proposed such programs as establishment of a Maine
Land Bank to protect Maine's public lands; development support for the
fishing industry; establishment of a comprehensive energy policy; improvement
of Maine's health care system; programs to assure financial accountability
and cost analysis for governmental agencies; expanded adult education;
and, most importantly, programs to ensure that "No Maine citizen should
be forced to choose between a decent job and a decent place to live. In
planning for Maine's future we must integrate economic and environmental
objectives." These papers were developed from research material in the
subject and campaign files.
