Background Note:
George J. Mitchell was born to Mary Saad and George Mitchell in Waterville, Maine. Mitchell attended Waterville High School and received his undergraduate education from Bowdoin College. He started his legal career working in the anti-trust division of the U.S. Justice Department in 1960. Mitchell's political career started in 1962 when he became executive assistant to Senator Edmund Muskie. Mitchell later went on to become deputy campaign manager for Muskie's presidential campaign in 1972; Democratic National Committeeman from Maine from 1969 to 1977; U.S. Attorney for Maine from 1977 to 1979; U.S. District Judge from 1979 to 1980; and in 1980 became U.S. Senator from Maine. Description:

Material--mostly photographs--documents Mitchell's early political career before he became a senator. There are also family photographs taken when Mitchell was a child and an adult. The material covers 1948 through 1990. Also included is correspondence from his time as a lawyer in the anti-trust division of the Justice Department and material documenting Mitchell's time as a high school student. In addition, there are books on Maine and other topics. Some books are signed.
